Cats go wherever the ground is soft.

Garlic, mint and mothballs are all ways to keep cats out without hurting them. I would actually suggest moth crystals, they work well. If not, you can buy a granular repellent at any pet store. It refreshes the deterring smell each time it rains.

We have the same problem.. cat repellents do not work, the motion sensor water sprinkler will work if you can set it up in the right spot.

We have done Cayenne pepper (rain/sprinkler/dew washes it away so you much reapply all the time)
Spray chemical repellents do not do a thing same reason as above.

I would if you are a male urinate into a container and pour/sprinkle it around the areas that are being effected.. this does work... the Pheromones in your urine will be stringer and therefor more dominant than the cats and they will leave.

I called or spoke with the neighbor about their cats and if they are disrespecting me and the cat issue and refuse to do anything then I call the animal control officer who placed have-a-heart traps in my yard trapped the cats and they were gone forever.
If you live in an area that has leash laws, it also applies to cats many times.. they carry disease and parasites, are a nuisance and become wild and over populated. I now own my own trap, trap the cats and hand them over to animal control myself. It is discusting and belong inside, if they can not properly take care of their pet then they shouldn't have one.
