How long would it take for a Parakeet to starve to death?
My husband found his Parakeet dead last night. It was one of two males he has. He was in fine condition, no wounds, just dead on the cage bottom.
We’re thinking maybe the other bird, who was much more aggressive than the one that doed, may have been keepng him from getting any food. Neither one of them were or are sick.
How long would he have gone without food to have died from this?

Parakeets arent like humans, they cant live long without food or water. Without food they can survive around 48 hours.
at least a week or two mabey 3 if he was lucky
Sorry to hear that. It’s probably more likely that he died of dehydration if the other bird was keeping him from the bowls. Having said that, the bird was probably able to access the food and water, but just had to wait until the other bird had his first. That’s usually how it works. I would advise taking the one that died to an avian vet for a necropsy. Birds can be ill and not show any signs (they often hide their illnesses as long as possible) and it’s possible he could have been ill. You’ll want to make sure there wasn’t anything else going on that was not apparent on the outside to ensure your other bird doesn’t share the same fate.
I’m really sorry for your loss.
i don’t know. but maybe he just died of old age. but you shouldn’t put two male parakeets together unless you have a large enough cage and two food dishes. 1) they might fight for dominance if left without these things and 2) one could starve to death like you think your’s did.
I think there is no easy answer to that…
If it was a Norvegian Parakeet i think u
better ask John Cleese or Graham Chapman, they do know….
Good Luck/ Lasse…
p.s. however I think Graham is indesposable for the moment..
better ask Cleese….
not true about the 2 males.. He might have been territorial.. and stopped him from etaing.. if you ahve more than one bird you should have had at least 2 bowls of each thing…i had 2 males in the same cage.. They were fine.. i even have to females.. right now im breeding them.. But…. LIke… i mean….he could have starved him.. He probably got some food… But when the other one stopped him… HE could eat no more……
No longer than 48 hours.
