How old is too old to finger train a parakeet?

We have a male parakeet who is finger trained. We are considering getting a female who is about 1 and 1/2 years old and is not hand trained. This is from a private breeder; the pet stores can’t sell birds until April. We would like to know whether to get this bird and try to tame her or to wait and get one from the pet shop.

They can be trained at any age, just the younger the easier.
Females can and DO bite though! I’ve shed blood on more than one occasion from a fiesty female who decided to put me in my place.
If you are patient and willing to put in the time and effort you can certainly tame an older female but personally I will only purchase older birds if they are male.
The breeder should let you hold the bird though. Handle her and see how quite and accepting she is. If she stays calm you will find it easier. If she is flighty and won’t settle while being held you might be better to pass on her and wait for a younger bird.
Also keep in mind that with a male and female they may turn and get aggressive if they go into breeding mode. This usually passes with the male, but they can become unfriendly for a while.
Personally I only keep males as pets, and only tame male babies to sell as pets. Lots of people have great success with females, but I’ve always found males to be easier.
It might take some time, but Yes, you can train an older bird. Be prepared to get bit some, as they will bite. If you have the patience, by all means take the older bird. If you want a younger bird, then wait until the petstore or a local breeder has some younger ones. Decision is yours..
the younger it is the easer but you can probably still traion it at an age
