Do not use saw dust. Rabbits can be litter trained, do you have a litter box? Rabbits do not need bedding, and things like saw dust especially are horrible for them. They have very delicated respiratory systems and what you’re doing is basically stuffing the area full of dust and possible allergens, not to mention that if it smells at all it can be harmful for them to be inhaling 24/7.
Where are you housing this animal? Rabbits should be housed indoors. And it is recommended very strongly. The average life span of an outdoor rabbit is something like 5 years and an indoor rabbit has an average life span of 8-12 years, with numbers like 14 not uncommon. There are just too many things that can go wrong outside, from predators attempt to attack the rabbit and literally frightening it to death, to predators ripping a hutch open and killing the animal. You may think a hutch is secure, but trust me, I’ve seen what dogs can rip through when they really want to. They are sensitive to both the cold and hot, and if the weather happens to change while you’re gone it can be disastrous. There’s just no good reason to house them outdoors and a giant list of reasons why not to. Rabbits do not smell and are extremely social.
How old is the rabbit? If it is over three months old it needs vegetables. At 7-9 months a rabbit’s diet should look like this: 1/8 of a cup of timothy pellets per five pounds, 1-2 cups of vegetables three different kinds per day, unlimited grass hay (oat, brome, timothy, bluegrass, orchard, etc.) and fruit as a treat every few days.
Have you rabbit proofed a room so that your rabbit can run around the house at a bare minimum of 2 hours a day?
