Science Diet Light a good dog food?
My dog has to lose about 8 lbs and my vet recommended Science Diet Light or MediCal (dry dog food). I’m leaning towards Science Diet Light because the MediCal is very expensive. However I’ve read some mixed reviews about the Science Diet food. Does it have a lot of filler junk in it or is it a good quality dog food. My dog needs a low calorie, low fat dry dog food.

Science Diet Light is a weight reduction food so it fills the dog up without putting tons of calories in his system. They dogs that have been eating it at the clinic I work at have all loved it so I’m assuming it doesnt taste like crap.
Hope this helps.
Science Diet is a junk dog food over run with fillers. And if you get the Light version there will be even more fillers to make the dog feel full while not adding any nutritional benefits. The best thing would be to get a food like Canidae that is an All-Life-Stage dog food and simply cut back on the amount you are feeding. To give your dog a lower calorie/lower fat diet, simply cut back on the amount of dog food you are feeding and do not give any treats (except things like carrots which don’t have many calories or fat).
i had the same problem when my dog was 2 stone over weight,i don’t know much about the science diet just that they can be a bit expensive,i bought him a light diet dry dog food i cut his food down by half and gave him 2 to 3 apple a day he lost 2 stone in 12 months and when he got older i bought senior dog food, this diet was recommended by my vet.
good choice Iams is anouther one
ditch the science and stay natural! Try premium natural foods such as dick van patten’s natural balance at petco or go raw.
good luck.
I wouldn’t feed any variety of Science Diet to my dogs. Just because they were the first "premium" food, doesn’t mean they’ve kept up to todays premium standards.
Dr. Christine Zink, a sports vet, suggests adding canned pumpkin (not the pie filling – the stuff in the vegetable aisle) to the diet of a dog for weight loss. Cut back the current ration of kibble by a third and add back in twice as much canned pumpkin. For example, if your dog eats a cup of food, cut it back to 2/3ds cup of kibble and add in 2/3rds cup of pumpkin. You can also use green beans as a healthier low calorie filler.
You can actually put him on Senior Lite Food, which is made for less active dogs, those who need to lose a little weight, and for older dogs.
A great-tasting, all-natural diet for dogs that need to watch calories or older dogs, Flint River Ranch Senior LITE Dog Kibble offers a Chicken, Lamb and Wheat-based formula with lower Protein and Fat levels than the Original Dog Kibble. Formulated for older and/or less active dogs, Flint River Ranch Senior LITE Dog Kibble provides a balanced nutritional diet without added fillers, by-products, or chemical preservatives..

It gives my dogs horrid gas. Feed him less and exercise him more. Cut out the treats.
You’ve had some great suggestions listed here. I’m going to offer another.
As already stated, Science Diet has a lot of fillers and is not considered a premium dog food. We feed our dog Innova EVO, which is a high quality, raw meat diet alternative in kibble form that has absolutely no grain or fillers. (They do have a light variety.)
You might want to check out their website: http://www.naturapet.com/brands . While there, you can actually list any other pet food to get a comparison of what you’re feeding, as well as find local places that sell the brand.
And yes, a high quality diet is more expensive than those brands made with fillers. But because the food is better for your pet, you feed less quantity-wise, and it pretty much equals out.
I’m sure whatever you choose will be a good product for you and your dog. Good luck!
