She is currently on Medi-Cal Dissolution cat food for 3 months to absorb the crystals. I just bought a big bag of Nutro Natural Choice Complete Care Indoor Adult Cat food a couple of weeks ago. After the 3 months is up, can I feed her the rest of this Nutro food until the bag is done, then put her on the Medi-Cal maintenance food to prevent crystals reoccurring? Or should I suck up my loss of from Nutro and go directly to the Medi-Cal maintenance food after the 3 months is up?

(We got kitty a couple of months ago from SPCA. She is Siamese/Persian mix. Probably was given up because she was peeing outside of the litterbox and the owners probably didn’t know better to take her to the vet. I took her to the vet and they found crystals in her urine. Was feeding her premium cat food since we got her.)
I have been feeding her a bit of wet food with her dry food. Some days she’d eat a teaspoon/day, sometimes none. Today I added water to wet food, heated it, and she ate some of it. (Right now I am just introducing the Medi-Cal into her diet so she doesn’t get intestinal problems, will be on a strict Medi-Cal diet on Saturday.)
Canadian I am. Doesn’t surprise me that Nutro is better than Medi-Cal, which is why I wanted to ask my question…. thanks.

I took my cat to the vet the other day because she seemed sick. It turned out she has some sort of infection of the urniary tract possibly due to crystals forming in her urine. Since this happened to her, she won’t be able to eat regular food anymore (Friskies, Meow Mix etc.) because those types of foods caused the crystals to form.

For the next couple of weeks I have to feed her some perscription food to help break up the crystal formations. Then after that, the vet told me that I have to buy this certain cat food to prevent this from happening again and it’s bucks a 4 lb. bag!

I don’t mind paying for more expensive food, but I was hoping if anyone had any information on places where you can buy special diet type foods for less than what you would pay at the vet.

Also, if anyone knew of a comparable food to buy in place of the expensive stuff that would be just as effective.

Thanks for the help.

I just got done with a 3 hour long visit to an animal hospital to find out why my cat wasn’t doing anything. They told me it was crystals along his urinary tract. He’s currently recovering, but I want to switch him over to wet foods so that I may prevent this.

What brand would you suggest of wet food? Ex. Friskies, Fancy Feast, etc. It was to be a brand that I can get at the local supermarket. Also, any home remedies that may help?

My dad lives at home with my two cats, and our current setup is a traditional litter box with with a hood. We use a trash bag as a liner and the fresh step crystals.

My worry is that while I’m away at school, he doesn’t change the litter often enough, he takes the 30 days to heart. I’ve read that you need more than one litter box if you have more than one cat, but I can say we’ve never had any problems.

My question to you is, are there any self cleaning litter boxes on the market that can handle two cats? I could see getting one and keeping the current box, but I would like for them to be kept in the same room. I have been looking at the new "Scoop Free" by Fresh Step (https://www.scoopfree.com/) but the user reviews I read claim that the waxy containers don’t last as long as they should, and replacements are very expensive ().

Other products I’ve seen, such as the Litter Mate, reportedly break down and gum up, the timer doesn’t wait long enough for the clumping to take place.

My cat’s vet recommended Science Diet or Eukanuba with low ph. My cat had surgery several years ago for a blocked (crystals) urinary tract system. The vet at the time said he would always have to be on their special vet diet food (low ph Eukanuba or Science Diet). A new Vet has since taken her place and he has not given me a straight answer. I was wondering if anyone else knows of a food that is low in ph that can be fed to a cat that has had crystal blockage. Oh, before he had the crystal blockage, I was feeding him Friskies because that was all that he would eat. The vet told me that was what caused it; that and stress from getting a new dog addition to the family.

One of my cats has crystals & that is the food that the vet said I should use, but its expensive. I’m on a disability, a fixed income.
& getting rid of the cat’s is not an option, so please spare me.

My cat has had a urinary problem for two years, he has crystals in his pee. He eats special vet food, but can he have normal treats like Pounce?
As long as he eats his science diet, he doesn’t have crystals but we tried to start him on normal food and he got crystals again. He hasn’t had crystals for a year, is that okay?

My male cat recently was treated for crystals in his urine. The suggested we feed him SD AD, but I was wondering if there were any comparable foods available in pet stores or supermarkets. Any advice would be helpful. Thanks!
Oops sorry, I think it was CD?
Maybe it was SD? I don’t know, all I know is that it was for crystals causing him not to be able to urinate. We’ve got him fixed on the water thing; he drinks tons. It’s just that the sci diet is really expensive and we can barely afford to feed ourselves–No one better even DARE say if we can’t afford him we shouldn’t be owners!
