My dog tested negative for heartworms in January and has been on Advantage Multi (for both fleas and heartworm) since then, but her 6-month supply has run out. I want to switch to a new brand of heartworm medicine, so do I need to get a new prescription from the vet? Will she need another heartworm test?
We got a baby rat from a pet store not too long ago. We took her to the vet and she had a Upper Respiratory Infection, so the vet gave us 2 meds. Since then she has started to breathe a lot better, no more wheezing or stuffy nose but she is very, very weak. She has trouble crawling and even cleaning herself. Often she will just stand still where ever we put her and will try to snuggle if we hold her, but thats it. Shes still alert, she is eating fine and loves her medicine, side note, her belly feels kind of bloaty.
Any ideas, or suggestions on what this is or how we can help her?
PS: to anyone who says "take it back"…May the fleas of a thousand camels infest your genitals, and your arms too short to scratch. Just because it is not a dog or cat does not mean we shouldn’t treat it with the same love, care, and worry.
We have her on this "Yesterday’s News" bedding in an open wire cage. We have a heating pad, blanket, and humidifier near her to keep her warm and hydrated. We also give her nebulizer treatments. The temp is around 68-75 F.
I honestly don’t know she is dying. But her symptoms of bloatyness and struggling to walk and clean herself is what made me think so.
Does the dog need a blood profile before the injections? One vet says yet the other no. What is the risk?
How long after the injections do you do another HW test?
Do you give HW prevent medicine the whole time or a # of weeks after the injections?
My dog Boris is 13 months old. I have given him heartworm medicine every month, once a month, since I got him 8 months ago.
Is it extremely important to make sure he gets it EVERY month?
My sis’s dog would not eat the heartworm medicine. I have tried to wrap it with ham and chicken BUT the dog will "unwrapped" the ham and chicken, and leave the heartworm medicine on the floor. Anyone has any other tricks? (besides shoving it down the dog’s throat?) GOSH! Please help!!
i gave my dog heartworm medicine today, and she seems somewhat lethargic and tired…could this be a side effect of the heartworm medicine? has this happened to your dog?
Okay so my friend has this CHH he adopted a few years back. The dog was discovered to have heartworm, and since the vet said that an operation would be risky, medication was given instead. Now the dog does not require any medication anymore, or any check ups and such. And the he says that the dog is healthy and fine.
-Can heartworm be completely treated by just the medicine?
-Do I need to bring it for check-ups in the future?
-Are there anything important I need to look out for?

How is Heartworm Treated?
In dogs, most cases of heartworm disease can be successfully treated with a drug called an adulticide that is injected into the muscle.
(Heartworms can be treated)
or are they prevention. because my dog is a year old and done with his shots. but he keeps eating catpoop. (havent found any worms yet though) the deworming shots from the pet store were 5 bucks. and the deworming meds are like 30. i am guessing the shots are prevention and meds are for dogs WITH worms. am i right?
please answer only if you know
sorry not deworming shots. deworming medicine they gave him through a tube. NOT SHOTS
Okay, so my neighbor purchased a dog about a year ago. The dog has no shots, tattoes and is not fixed. She has not even seen a vet. I told her that it was almost heartworm season, and she asked what it was. So I explained it to her and she called up the vet and asked how much it would cost. The vet said it was 0 including the medicine, and my neighbor says she can’t afford it. I would offer to pay, but I own 7 dogs myself and there is no discounts available at this time. I was just wondering, on a scale of 1 to 10, 10 being extremely important and 1 meaning it doesn’t really matter, how important would you say it is?
People, also remember to check back often because I usually reply to each message.
To the first person to post (sorry, I forgot your name), it’s actually her sons dog, he’s 17 and he has a job. He promised that he would pay for it, but now he’s refusing to.
to CS, your welcome LOL.
There are plenty of other vets around here, but she doesn’t drive (and neither do my parents), so there is no way for her to get her dog there. Busses don’t allow dogs (even if they’re in a kennel) and neither to Taxi’s. She would have to walk, and this vet is the closest one to us. the 0 is for 6 months.
To Nedra E: Her dog is (unfortunately) a border collie/golden retriever cross. She is about 1 year old, and I would call Animal Control on her but I can’t bring myself to do it. She has been our friend for quite a while, and her dog is very sweet. I would hate for them to get rid of her. I know that she could have a better life, but there are just so many dogs coming into the humane society that I’m almost positive that she’ll be put down.
To Kate: Thanks, I was just surprised that she hasn’t ever heard of heartworm, and that dog was not her first. I’m trying to convince her as much as I can, and my mom is doing the same. Hopefully she’ll listen to us.
DP: Her dog hasn’t had ANY shots, including rabies. I guess they just don’t think it’s important.
To everyone else: All of my dogs get annual shots, and they have just gotten theirs for this year about two weeks ago. They are all neutered, and my only female is spayed. They’re microchipped, tattoed and licensed.
Thanks everybody. I’m going to show her this. Sometimes I guess you just need to hear it from other people. If she doesn’t AT LEAST get her dog its first shots, then I’m going to have to call the Humane Society on her..
