i adopted a 3 legged dog recently. he is still working on socialization. so this question is for future knowledge. i would just like some knowledge possibly from someone who has gone through therapy dog certification or someone in the sacramento, ca area who knows someone i can contact.

i think it would be a really good thing for him and also for people who are hurt or are in need of recovery for whatever their problem may be. this dog had been badly abused by his previous owners. they beat him with a baseball bat when he was a puppy. they shattered his shoulder and thus his shoulder had to be amputated. they also kicked him out in the cold (as a puppy mind you), his arm healed all wierd and bone was grinding on bone. his rescuers eventually trapped him, and adopted him to me after his surgery was done.

he is making leaps and bounds with his socialization as well as obedience and some other "fun" tricks as well… i know he has the spirit and capapability to become a therapy dog and i think it would send a really good message to never give up even when things seem like they cant get any worse

I am thinking about getting my Dachshund registered as a therapy dog so that she can go into nursing homes and brighten the citizens lives. She is 7 years old and a very sweet dog. She is great in her obedience. She also loves everyone. I know some places you have to take a test. I live in AL where are some places that I could take the test and what does the test include? Is there anything that I would need to know about doing this? Thanks!
I wouldn’t need to contact a trainer since I am one myself :) Which is why I said she is great in obedience. She also knows 94 commands, tricks, and words.

Perhaps this is an unrealistic breed….are there any dogs that can run 5-10 miles every other day at at 7-8 min/mile but can still be docile and calm apartment dogs? I really want a dog that is lazy and likes to cuddle (except when it’s time to run) and is smart, obedience capable, and good with cats.

Steps to make my dog a therapy dog?

One thing I would really love to do would be to make one of my dogs a therapy dog. It would be quite obvious that I would try to make Sophie this, as Lily is simply to nervous and scared of every little thing (I guess that’s what I get for buying a pet store puppy) to ever become one (not that I wouldn’t try).

Anyways,

Info on Sophie:
Sophie loves to be cuddled by people, never bites, can deal with little kids poking, pulling, and screaming around her, and is not aggressive to other dogs. In fact it seems like she would rather hang out with people than dogs. She is a mutt of unknown breeds (although we guess that she is a GSD/Sibe/Lab) and weighs about 50 pounds. She loves to just sit down next to you and you can pet her for hours.

My questions:

1. Do you think Sophie could become a therapy dog?

2. If so, how would I begin? Websites, personal experience, advice, etc. would be helpful.

3. What would it be like having a therapy dog? What sort of jobs does it entail?

4. Am I old enough to be in charge of a therapy dog, and take one around to help out? (I am fourteen, and will be fifteen in three months)

5. Would the process of making Sophie a therapy dog be costly? Would it cost anything at all? if so, how much, on average?

6. How long do you think it would take until Sophie could become a registered therapy dog?

7. Do you/Have you own(ed) a therapy dog? What was it like?

Wow, sorry for all the questions, I didn’t notice there were so many, but I would really like some information.

Thank you!
Sorry, I forgot to include the obedience part.

Sophie knows sit, lie down, stay, paw, spin, jump, leave it, get back, off and other things but they aren’t really important.

therapy dog. breeds. help?

hello, i have always wanted a therapy dog. i have two dogs now but one is a bit fearful of strangers after an accident she had when she was younger and got hit by a car. and the other one is getting older and has a temperament toward younger kids with high voices and other dogs. so i am looking into getting a younger dog (under a yr is tht good?) or a little puppy. i want to know which dog breeds are good for therapy dogs. and i know that it depends how they are raised and trained. but also how the breed is whether they are a family dog or not. so i would like to know which breeds are good with people, and get along with other animals, and that i will be able to train to be a good therapy dog. (i am okay with a little challenge in training, but nothing out of control.) and also what are the requirement for a therapy dog as far as getting along with ppl? and other dogs? and anything else?? thanks in advance!
i would like a medium – large+ breed. and i definately do plan on looking up more, this means alot to me. i just want sort of ideas to look into. thank you all.
rotten rotts… i know that they need to get along people and dogs, i put that in as example of my requirements..i was asking what else besides that.. i have trained my dogs and outer family dogs. i know how to train a dog with good ol obedience

Making my dog a therapy dog?

I have a UKC registered American Pitbull Terrier and would love to have him become a therapy dog. He is so gentle with children and seniors, he loves to be around them. I know Pitbulls are being used left and right as police, service, and therapy dogs nationwide. I want to make mine another ambassador for his breed.i live in Bellingham, Wa and have no clue how to get started.
I have the obedience issue covered. He far surpasses sit and stay. He is also extremely reliable when it comes to commands. I tell him to lay down and stay, walk out of the room and ten minutes later he is in the same place.

And Basset’s answer below..

”We do generally have homes lined up, however it’s not uncommon for some of those homes to fall through for one reason or another, so you may end up with "leftovers".”’

So if you do have ‘leftovers’ because of the above reasons, do you discount the price IF you find the right home for the pup?

”’This is not a problem for me, my pups have a home with me until the appropriate home comes along for them””

I have heard of breeders that have a show prospect pup, show the pup, the pup can’t handle the ring and they try to find a home for him. When they find the right home, they don’t charge anything for the pup. Is this a common practice?

If you have a pet pup left that would be great for obedience, would you discount the price if you found someone that wants a pup for this reason?

Please star for Animal and Basset
Golden

”’If the pup showed a real aptitude for Obedience over the ring then why would that make the pup less valuable?”’

No it wouldn’t make the pup less valuable, if that is what the breeder wants to do. But if you are a breeder looking for a show pup, an Obedience dog may not be as ‘valuable’ to you
