So I JUST made this connection. I have a rescued Border puppy that I’m fostering, he’s twelve months old, and is pretty much a fantastic pet. But he has a closet demon, he’s from a pet store (bred for them), and he has crate aggression on random occasions.
They kept him in a crate every day all day (no walks, no outside time, the only "out" he got was to be moved into another crate when they were cleaning his first one).
It just now dawned on me because when he goes into the crate a first time, he’s okay with it. But the second time, he growls and gets very stressed out.
Could this possibly be because of his ordeal as a puppy of never leaving the crate, and he now thinks that he’s never coming back out?
He was at the pet store for two or three months, and he was given up because of this issue. They’ve had him for six months, purchased him when he was four and a half months old.
My question is, can I safely use a crate again without stressing him out, or should I implement another form of ‘housing’ when we leave for the day?
I know the pet shop he came from, and ALL dogs are kept the way he was, many three and four dogs to a cage (depending on size). My second question is should I report them for animal cruelty now that they’ve psychologically damaged a dog- and probably many many more?
