A new birds nest popped up in my back yard and there are a couple baby birds there. They are the common small brown birds you see all around California. I went to the place where I usually pick up rodents for my snake and they said they are all out until next week. Snakes gotta eat and I know in the wild they eat wild birds.

I have an indoor rabbit that I keep in a nice wooden hutch. The hutch has a partition for a bedding area that’s completely enclosed and then it has a partition for the food/toys, etc., that is open with caged sides where the rabbit can play, etc. Underneath there is a tray that runs the length of the hutch to catch all the droppings, urine, and food she might throw about. The rabbit can’t get to the tray because it’s under the caged floor (it slides up under the floor). I put soft bedding in her bed partition for her to sleep on and she likes that.
BUT what I need advice on is a litter/liner/bedding for the tray. I’ve been using cat litter to line the tray but the tray is so big (42 inches long) that it’s difficult to maneuver when changing it without dumping the cat litter in the floor. I thought of just using newspaper, but then the urine might leak thru to the bottom of the tray and then THAT would have to be cleaned quite often.
I straighten out her cage daily and clean it out altogether once a week. Any advice on what to use that would make my life easier when cleaning out the tray would be greatly appreciated!! THANKS!
I realize that rabbits aren’t rodents, but as you noticed, there is no other place to put rabbit questions. I also put the same question in the "other – pets" section. Thanks for the rabbit link!

Okay, I would like to breed hamsters. Not for profit, just because I LOVE rodents and I love to see baby animals. I also would like to have just a family line of hamsters.
So what should I need?
How hard is it?
How to tell what gender it is?
At what age should I start breeding?
Anything else?

I keep seeing answers to questions that just state that keeping birds in cages is cruel and all birds should fly free. Well, I want to know your reasoning and I’d like you to consider a few things.
We keep fish in tanks. Fish are usually in millions of gallons of water, yet it’s acceptable to keep them in 5, 10, 20 gallon tanks? Why don’t you oppose that?
Rodents are outside where they have miles of space and they don’t need a wheel to run on just to stay healthy, yet it’s ok to stick them in a tiny cage?
Dogs and cats in the wild have acres and acres all to themselves, yet it’s acceptable to coop them up in a kennel, house or backyard?
And here’s the kicker- Children in Africa living outside also have miles to roam around. Why are our children expected to stay in the house or yard? They need exercise, too.
So, stop telling me that it’s cruel to keep birds in cages. Most pet birds are treated better than humans, so start focusing your energy on people who really do mistreat animals.
Now, I am against people who coop up their birds in small cages and don’t let them out to play. THAT is wrong, but for people like me who have ridiculously large cages and let their birds out all the time to play, I don’t see the harm.
Also, the whole flying issue. Some birds like to fly, others don’t. Most don’t have a preference. If the bird is getting fat because it can’t fly and needs more exercise, then you should let it fly-on a leash.

In March I decided to write reviews for products on Petco.com. I have a wide variety of rodents, plus cats and a dog, so I thought, why not write reviews. I am a fourteen year old, and I am a girl. Do you think it is weird that I’m a top 25 contributor on petco.com?

I’m moving internationally and there’s no possible way to take my pet rats with me. I don’t think anyone will want them because they’re older (nearing 3 years old) and not cute anymore. They have thinning hair, one has a mammary tumor, and one has a tumor on her foot with a sore that refuses to heal (the vet has said he can’t do anything for her). The girls are tame and don’t mind being picked up. I have a boy rat that is balding and doesn’t like to be held, but doesn’t bite. His cagemate is a year old and is active and healthy, but also shies away from people, but is not aggressive. They all get around just fine, are active and eating well. I didn’t want to have them put down at the vet because I heard it would be too painful. What should I do?
VirtueofIntolerance: That line of thinking would go along with feeding your ailing dog or cat to a hungry lion because they’re lower on the food chain. People that have never raised small animals, such as rats, don’t realize what good pets they make. Just because they’re rodents, have a shorter lifespan and don’t "bark" or "meow" doesn’t mean that they are less of a pet.

Please help! I really want a dwarf hamster, but my mom does not like rodents, and my dad says no. I have already read several books on hamsters, and I am sure that I am prepared for one. What can I do to get my parents to let me have a hamster?

I adopted her in September when she appeared at my door and took her to the Vets for shots etc. They said she had parasites from drinking bad water outside, also worms from eating rodents or birds I guess and she was treated for anything necessary. She had been fine up until 4 or 5 days ago. The only thing changed is the brand of friskies. I do have 3 other cats and are all fine.

I have four cats and two rabbits. My cats love my rabbits! They will lick them and cuddle with them. They try to hunt/eat hamsters and mice though. So I was wondering why they like my rabbits but not rodents. Is it because their smaller?
No, rabbits are not rodents. They are lagomorphs.
