I have an eight year old diabetic Shih-Tzu on insulin twice a day. My vet advised what ingrediants should be in her food and recommended Science Diet WD that he sells out of his office. When I found better alternatives after researching dog foods online he made excuses for sticking to Science Diet. He would not give me a prescription to buy it where my wife could get it at a discount. I have to travel nearly an hour one way to get to his office and an hour back for a bag of prescription dog food. He is doing the same with the insulin. Insisting I buy it from his office. I am convinced he is not looking out for the best interest of my pet but rather for himself. I have switched to another vet nearby but suspect I may run into the same problem. My research tells me that Science Diet is dog junk food. My dog has done well eating Blue Free Range Free Lamb and Brown Rice for the past year and a half. It seems to have what is requireds for a diabetic dog. Has anyone else had this problem? I would not recommend that anyone blindly trust the recommendation of a vet. They are in it for the money.

My dachshund is overweight, and everytime I take her to the vet, I have to hear how overweight dachshund are prone to back problems and I get depressed. I know I have to help her with her weight problem-but here’s my dilemma. I want her to enjoy her food too, if she doesn’t-she sneaks cat food. Right now I’m feeding her Nutro-Natural choice for Overweight dogs. She loves it. But she doesn’t really seem to loose weight with it, but doesn’t gain either. But when my vet had me put her on the low-cal Science Diet she actually gained weight because she would sneak any food she found anywhere, because she hated it. Help! I want my pooch to be happy and healthy.

I witnessed a beautiful 7 month old Siamese cat being abused. They surrendered the cat to me and now I am trying to nurse it back to heath. I’ve had it to the vet, however, I’m trying to "fatten" it up a bit. Im giving it Science Diet and Nutro kitten chow, but it hasn’t gained much weight. Any suggestions?

My kitties eat a combination of Eukanuba and Purina Pro Plan dry food. I like to give them moist food daily but can’t seem to find anything that they really like to eat = ( Here is what I have tried.
Sheba
Purina Pro Plan
Whiskas
Meow mix
Friskies
Iams
All of the moist food in those little flavor puches
Whiskas
Science Diet
and probably a couple I missed.
Has anyone else had this problem? What moist food does your kitty eat?
Thanks

I live in a remote area of Canada, and the only types of cat food that are available locally are the mass market supermarket brands (Whiskas, Purina, Purina ONE, Iams, etc.). The only available premium type brand is Science Diet. I know that a lot of people recommend the all natural brands like Nutro, Innova, etc, and that in the US, these brands are typically similar in price to Purina ONE or Iams. However, the cost of purchasing these in Canada as well as shipping them to my location makes anything not available locally cost prohibitive.
Of the major brands, which are the best for my cats? Looking at ingredient lists alone, Iams appears to heavily by product and corn meal laden. Purina One appears to be somewhat better than Science Diet. Any suggestions?

Any thing with corn, meat by products, had been recalled, and are owned by large corporations like Purina, Pedigree, Iams, Science Diet, and Nutro. Check out the ingrediants.

I have 2 cats of 16 weeks each, i was wondering what brand of dry food it would be good for them, i have heard science diet is very good, but i think is very expensive, same to natural choice. I want to know which dry food brand is not very expensive, but it will help my cats to have a very shiny coat, a good vision, and very healthy. and what about whiskas kitten dry food?

I got my cat neutered at a low cost clinic and the vet there told me that any dry food is fine as long as you stay away from generic. My regular vet later told me that science diet or iams is better than the Friskies that I feed my cats but he didn’t say why.

We just got a 9 week old kitten. We keep science diet (dry) food out for him as well as water all the time. He wasn’t eating it so I started giving him the canned food, which he seems to love. How much should I give him a day? A full can (for kittens)? I’ve been feeding him when he seems hungry, 2-3 times a day.

I’m torn between these two brands as they both have good and bad sides. I like science diet because it doesn’t test on animals while the iams company does. However, reading the ingredients, iams has chicken, but science diet does not, just byproduct, but my parents saw a huge difference for the better in their cats when feeding them science diet. I’d like to get some opinions on which one of these two is better. Oh, and I also heard the SPCA and PETA hates the hills company.
Thanks.
