Hi There!

I am getting a 6 week old Golden Retriever tomorrow. It is a little girl. I will be training her to be a service dog for myself. I was wondering if anybody out there that raised puppies for service dogs could give me any suggestions? What did you do??? How did you train the dog as far as manners, etc…

Any help will be great! Thanks!
Jennifer

PS: the puppy is a blonde Golden Retriever. What would you name the little girl???
We were thinking: Summer, Malibu, Maui

Any ideas??? Thanks

Does anyone have a service dog?

Hey, I was thinking about applying for a Service Dog….
I have refractory (basically incurable seizures) and a Service Dog (especially a Seizure Response One) might be able to help me with my ADLS.

Does anyone have a service dog? if so what are you experiences?
i already know how to qualify and where to get one, i want to know peoples experiences with service dogs

For all types of service dogs.
Also if lil_farfa answers this I tried logging onto pleasedontpetme.com and it says I haven’t been excepted yet so I sent a very polite and considerate e-mail to them to try and get excepted faster. It’s been a week and a half since I registered.

I am disabled and i am interested in getting a service dog to help me. Everything that i have read about service dogs says that you cant adopt one if you already have dogs. So I’m wondering if i can have one of the dogs i already own trained to be a service dog? If so where do you take them to be trained. What requirements are there? Any more information on this would be so helpful!

It is NOT an option for me to get rid of my other dogs

I have problems moving around and I have 2 kids. My doctor says that a service dog would help. But I have only see where you need to pay up and over 3000.00 and the waiting list is over 8 months long. I was wondering if anybody knew of service dogs that are trained that were given to people who needed them for free or little cost. We have a friend ( she lives back east and we have no way of contacting her) who is blind and she didn’t pay a cent for her service dogs. Any ideas. I live in Northern CA. if that helps! Thanks!

PS: We can not afford 3000 for a dog.

Taking a Service Dog to China?

Ok, after a lot of discussion, I’ve decided to have my German shepherd girl professionally trained to become a service dog for me. Shouldn’t be so hard, as she’s pretty much 80% there, but I want to make sure.

However, we also plan on going on vacation to China this summer. I know pet dogs have to be quarantined for 30 days or so after arrival. Does the same apply to service dogs? I doubt the ADA protects service dogs and their handlers in China… or do they?
Well, I WILL be taking her to China with me. I don’t exactly see the risk. I have a relative who owns a 5 star hotel there, and we’ll be staying there. And I’d rather have her along than go on medication, thank you very much.
Joan – whether or not she has received her certifications is completely unrelated. Service dogs do not need to be professionally certified or anything to be service dogs.

Oh, and China does recognize service dogs. I watched a show on service dogs in China.
Misskitt, she will not be on the menu, thank you for your concern. I’ll make a wager that I know more about living in China than you do.

Most I see are labs or German Shepherds but can rottweilers be good assist dogs too? What is quality of these breeds that allows them to be good assist/service dogs?

My girl is in training to be a therapy dog, and obviously it takes a lot of socialization. She’s well-mannered in public, we take her wherever we can, but she’ll be able to come more places with us if we prove that she IS a therapy dog, although she isn’t taking the test for a few more months, so she doesn’t have her I.D.

If we get her a vest with "therapy dog in training" on it, would she be allowed? Or do you need the actual I.D.? Because she really needs to get experience in busy places, not just at PetSmart or Home Depot.

Thanks!
Oh no, I’m not talking about WalMart or things with groceries. Only service dogs are allowed there. I’m talking about malls, and stores without food. They say they allow therapy dogs, for socialization, but I don’t know if they need the I.D. or if an in-training vest will do.
I think many of you are confused. I already have permission, but only if I have proof that she really is. Therefore I’m not "confusing the public" or wanting a "novelty" pet. I’m wanting to take her to see distractions, mass people, business, etc.

What are the service dog laws in Egypt?

My mom and I are considering going there for a vacation, but I need to know what the laws are for service dogs there. I use a guide dog for partial blindness if that matters.
