Pet food recall for Purina Cat Chow?

I was wondering if anyone knew of any Purina dry cat food being recalled or has anyone else had problems with it? I have two cats, one of which was put on a diet so I purchased Purina Cat Chow Lean. The following day, my youngest cat began throwing up repeatedly. I had to take him to the vet two days in a row where they had to put him on medication and inject him with fluids…twice!! I haven’t seen anything about this brand being recalled but it’s so hard to keep up or find the most updated sites. The only that changed was that I began mixing his regular food (Purina Cat Chow Indoor formula) with this food the day before. Although it doesn’t contain wheat gluten, it does contain corn gluten and wheat, so I’m concerned that there might be something wrong with this food as well. I haven’t fed it to him since and he’s been fine but I’d like to know why he got so sick. If anyone knows anything, I’d appreciate their help.
Hi everyone, thanks for all the quick responses. I’m still in the process of researching this. I’ve discovered that Medi Cal is on the list, albeit wet food they say. I was provided a package of this by my vet prior to purchasing the Purina Lean cat food so now I’m not sure if it was the Purina or the Medi Cal that might have done it. I will continue to research this and hopefully come up with an answer as to what the cause was.

thanks again.
Wow, you guys are quick! In answer to some of your comments, he’s 4 years old and has never had any issues before so I dont’ think that was the issue given the fact that it was such a small amount mixed in with his usual food. He does get home made little treats from time to time and, as far as contacting the manufacturers, given what I’ve seen in the news and how Medi Cal assured the FDA that no tainted food reached Canada when in fact it had, I’m not sure I really want to trust them.

Science Diet MD Prescription Dry Cat food pulled?

Hill’s Pet Nutrition has recalled its Prescription Diet m/d Feline dry cat food apparently because it includes included wheat gluten from the same supplier that Menu Foods used.
For anyone worried about whether this was a question, just preface the above "question" with "Did you know that.." So ya, it’s a question AND an update.

My dog has eaten Nutro wet pouches for at least a year now.. so the ones I fed her recently were tainted for sure (checked the dates, etc.). Anywho, she was drinking a lot of water and still is, probably due to some kidney damage (taking her to the vet next week).. We took her to the vet a month ago, though, when no one knew about the tainted food, and she had a slight fever. The doctor gave her antibiotics and she started drinking less water, although still more than usual. Do you think the antibiotics could have helped at all with the tainted wheat gluten? I mean, could it have prevented any kidney damage in any way? I know we don’t know what was in the wheat germ in the first place so it’s hard to say.. Also, my dog is the pickiest eater in the whole world. She’s supposed to eat 3 pouches a day, but generally only eats 1-2 pouches. Do you think that could also have helped in any way to lessen to severity of kidney damage (because she ate 30-40% less than she should have)?

Ok, this whole recall thing is getting worse and worse. It was bad enough when people’s beloved pets were getting ill and dieing. It got ten times worse when I found out Menu Foods knew about this since December. I felt sick to my stomach when I read that the company started testing the tainted food on healthy cats and dogs, killing 6 out of every 10. Now it’s coming out that rat poison may be in the food!

Something is seriously wrong here. Is it just me or did Menu Foods intentionally lie to everyone that the problem was wheat gluten when they knew in the first place it was rat poison? Anybody else have the feeling the whole wheat gluten story was just a lie and maybe Menu Foods never intended to admit it was rat poison? When the government stepped in and conducted its own testing did that "force" the truth out of this horrible company?

Friskies cat food?

Any recalls on this? it says no on the list…i know wheat gluten is the culprit, which is in some of the cans i have. Is it my best bet to just return them & exchange for non wheat gluten ones?
ok, i’m not asking for your opinions on what i should feed my cat. he does not exclusively eat friskies. i wish people could just answer the question i ask & not lecture me.

Cats sick from Nutro canned food?

My two otherwise healthy 4 year old kitties were recently sick. Both had elevated levels of BUN and Creatinine. Hayley required hospitalization for IV fluids and Tino needed two doses of sub-q fluids. Both are doing better now. I can’t be sure but I think the illness was related to the food recall. They both had eaten Nutro Max Classics Canned food – Lamb and Turkey Cutlets manufactured on Jan 22 07. This particular food was not recalled but it does contain wheat gluten and was produced during same time period as the recalled food. I contacted Menu Foods, the FDA, and Nutro and nobody has gotten back to me. I just wanted to alert people about the possible bad food. Has anyone else had a similar experience with this food?

I’m currently feeding my 2 cats friskies wet and dry food and whiskas dry food. I was told that these are bad for a cat because of all the "fillers", what are the best brands of wet and dry cat food that you can buy in a regular grocery store or a place like petsmart? My mom feeds her cats 9lives in the can, is that any better? I have noticed that most of my cans of friskies has wheat gluten in it which is what started the recall so i stopped feeding them cans that contain wheat gluten but need a good brand of wet and dry food. Thanks!!!
