What is the best dog food from Pet smart?
I currently feed my Akita mix the lite formula from Nutro. I know this isn’t the greatest food from reading the label and I want to switch. I’m not concerned about the cost of the food but it has to come from Petsmart. She is about 10 years old and 50 pounds but she should weigh about 40. Thanks in advance for your ideas or suggestions.

Feeding your dog the right food is crucial for their health, happiness and well being. I have two cairn terriers myself, and I often try to get the highest quality natural dog food. I stopped buying commercial brand dog foods ever since my dog’s vet "educated" me on looking at the ingredients instead of name brands when buying dog foods. Try avoiding foods made primarily with corn, cornmeal or ground-meal. These are just fillers and are not healthy for your dog’s intestinal tracts. Look for either chicken, beef or fish with some vegetables as the first ingredients listed on the label. These will give your Akita the protein and nutrients he needs on a daily basis and if you’re lucky, he’ll thank you for the substantive change in flavor and taste.
Currently, I’m feeding the boys Dr. Foster & Smith’s can and dry dog foods made with real chicken, beef and brown rice formula.
There’s no one brand that is right for your dog, however, you have to be a bit more discerning at choosing what your dog likes to eat and don’t forget to look at the ingredients closely.
If price isn’t a concern get the highest quality natural dog foods you can find, unfortunately they’re not located at Petsmart.
As for the 10lbs overweight, exercise will shed the weight much safer than diet alone. Take your doggie for 1 mile brisk walk regularly. Don’t stop to smell the flowers or hydrate every tree along the path. It should be slightly above leisure pace. One mile is equivalent to walking out 10 minutes in any direction and 10 minutes coming back.
Dog lovers are some of the finest people I know.
Good luck.

I think Pet Smart sells Wellness which is among the best.
Where I live they also sell By Nature Organics, which is, IMHO, the best. If they don’t have it, ask for it.
If they sell Wellness Core, buy that. It has no grains and is very highly rated. My dog loves it.
There are slim pickings of quality foods from Petsmart… here are their better quality foods that they carry:
- Blue Buffalo – http://www.bluebuff.com/
- Natural Balance – http://www.naturalbalanceinc.com/
- Nutro Ultra (*only* the Ultra line, the other ones are much lower in quality) – http://www.ultraholistic.com/
And if you have a PetCo nearby, here are the better quality foods that they carry:
- Solid Gold – http://www.solidgoldhealth.com/
- Castor & Pollux – http://www.castorpolluxpet.com/
- Natural Balance – http://www.naturalbalanceinc.com/
.
I started getting Wellness for my cat because they were not affected by the food chaos. That tells me that they have their food made in more trusting places (I hope). I would stay away from Iams and Science Diet; the latter is owned or affiliated with Proctor and Gamble, which tests its other products on animals.
Edit – I see on Wikipedia that Science Diet is owned by Colgate, which is as bad as P&G. P&G owns Iams.
Wellness is the best. Go wellness
