When should I start cleaning the parakeet cage?
I bought a parakeet today (06/20/10) and I’m wondering when to start cleaning his cage. I want to keep the bird’s home clean but I do not want to scare him since he’s still adjusting to the new home.
How do you clean it and how do you get the bird out of the cage to clean it without scaring the bird?

As a rule I clean the bottom of the cage and wipe down the perches every day, including the feed & water bowls. I just use warm water with a tiny bit of dish detergent.
I give the cage a good wipe down once a week, just using warm water.
You don’t have to remove your bird when you do this, just speak quietly to him, move slowly when you clean up. He will get used to you doing this in time and won’t panic.
When your bird becomes hand tamed, you can then move him to a temporary small cage and do a more thorough clean of the cage.
Well, you could clean their cages whenever you think it is dirty, but make sure you clean the bottom of the cage everyday day, because it could get very dirty there. The parakeet shouldn’t be very scared of you within a few hours or so, it it should let you touch it slowly, but in my opinion, you should clean the whole cage yet until the parakeet isn’t afraid of you yet, until then, just clean the bottom of the cage (which is where the poops and seeds are because parakeets are messy eaters)
